King Władysław III would serve as the figurehead of this crusade, and in mid-October 1444 he would lead a mostly Magyar army of 40,000 across the Danube toward Ottoman positions in occupied Byzantine territory in modern Bulgaria. Władysław III, King of Poland and HungaryĪ new crusade was to be formed to expel the Ottomans from Europe, to be led by the influential nobleman János Hunyadi, who had made a name for himself as a great commander and an inspiration to all Christians for his fierce resistance to Ottoman incursions. He won the crown of Hungary, but the Pope's support came with a price. Władysław accepted, and with support from Pope Eugene IV, he defeated the forces of the late king's widow in a two-year civil war. The Estates invited King Władysław III of Poland to take the throne. The nobles of Hungary decided that this was unacceptable, as they quickly needed a strong, fighting king to continue to lead the struggle against the aggressive Turkish Empire. According to his will, his successor was to be his 4-year old son, Ladislaus.
